The story of the film starts from a small area of Dharavi in Mumbai. Murad (Ranveer Singh) is a Mumbai youth who struggles with poverty and social boycott, whose dream is to become a great rapper. Murad loves his fiercely possessive girlfriend Safeena (Alia Bhatt). Murad’s life changes when he sees MC Sher (Siddhant), raping with college boys one day. Murad joins with Siddhant after this, and both of them begin to rap by creating their own team. Murad’s friend and family support him in his work and he becomes a great rapper.
There is a line in the film, in which the character MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) says, “If everyone in the world becomes comfortable then who would rap?” Director Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’ is the story of a simple boy from Dharavi who despite his poverty, does not allow his dreams to die. Murad’s journey to the film is interesting. The film can be something different according to the Indian audiences because the rap is music genre which is not very popular in India. But it is not necessary to relate the movie to rap only because you will be bound by the performance and story of the actors in the film.
The screenplay of the film is written by Reema Kagti and Zoya, which is very tight. In the film, Ranveer has brilliantly played his role. Alia Bhatt’s performance is as good as ever, though her role is small but affects. Ranveer and Alia cute chemistry take both characters into a new height in the film. In his debut film, Siddhant Chaturvedi has conveyed that he is still a great actor. In the film, the roles of Vijay Verma, Kalki Koechlin, and Vijay Raj are small but are so powerful that the film could not be completed without them.
Music of the movie has already been hit. This film is inspired by the real life of Naezy and Divine. Background visuals of the movie can compete with any Hollywood movie. The rap battle shown in the story is written perfectly. The only problem with the film is that it is 2:30-hour long film but the tight story and movie dialogue keep you bound.
